Do I Have To Have Good Credit For Federal Loans And Private Loans For School?
Feb 08, 2007 by Cameron C | Posted in Financial Aid
I am applying for monetary aid to pay for school, but I might need loans to help me besides the grants. Do I need good credit for me to get any type of loan to staff pay school?
There is no credit discover for the Federal Stafford loan - after all, it was created specifically because the typical student hasn't had a come about to establish a credit history. There is a credit check required for a Federal Parent PLUS credit, but it still has a relatively high approval rate.
Private student loans, since they are not guaranteed by the gov, are credit-based. Your interest price will be determined by your credit rating. If you have a co-signer with good credit, that can help.
In general you want to max out your federal loans (start by applying for the FAFSA) since they normally have the best interest rates and most generous repayment terms. Then, get private loans to cover the shelf.
As always, be conservative and borrow only what you need.

Im about to go to college with a GED, and I call for to apply for a few loans on top of Financial Aid. I've heard about the Perkins and Stafford loans. My credit isnt the best, will I be denied these loans? Who gives out these loans, banks?colleges?
Predominantly student loans given by the state do not require credit checks. I believe the Perkins and Stafford are federally funded; as far as I recognize, no credit checks required there either. The student loans I have worked with are state funded. I don't believe you will have a imbroglio with the student loans. Good luck to you.
